2023 in Review

As 2023 comes to a close, we at New Moon are reflecting on our first full year of work. We are deeply thankful for the amazing support we’ve received from funders and community alike. It is a joy and an honor to be undertaking this project with the wind at our backs.

New Moon was launched in the summer of 2022 to advance the rights and welfare of people in the sex trade by increasing funding and support for the movement for sex workers rights. We hit the ground running and are proud to share some of our accomplishments. A full report on our efforts and impact will be issued in Q1 of 2024, but in the meantime we have some exciting stats to share:

What We’ve Accomplished

  • We distributed over $180,000 to over 40 survivor and sex worker led organizations in the US through grants, sponsorships, and donations.

  • We paid out over $10,000 in advocate stipends to Spokes Hub graduates. Spokes Hub has been running for a little over a year, and has had 130+ participants, and graduated 20 people.

  • We attended 25 conferences to uplift sex work as a human rights issue to philanthropists, corporations with giving plans, and foundations for social justice.

  • We launched the AAIR Directory to aid advocates in finding information, data, and opportunities relevant to their work.

  • We offered technical assistance to 13 grassroots groups on accounting. budgeting, policy advocacy, and fiscal sponsorship.

  • We sponsored 8 advocates in learning about prosecutorial discretion in our first pilot training. We had over 30 people register for this training, and will explore ways to make the training more widely available in 2024.

  • We co-coordinated 5 live events, including a donor briefing on the state of global sex workers’ rights funding in partnership with the Sex Work Donor Collaborative.

  • Finally, we’ve built a capable team that leads with lived experience. Over 90% of the people we’ve hired and contracted with since launching New Moon are people with lived experience in the sex trade.

This work wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Matching Program to Unlock Giving to Expand Women's Power & Influence, as well as from donations from Mama Cash, the Abortion Bridge Collaborative Fund at Women Donors Network, Vital Projects, and Sex Work Rights. We are thankful also to the many individual donors who have chosen to join us in the journey to advance human rights for people in the sex trade. Without you, none of this work would be possible.
